Good morning English students! Please turn in your printed editorials to your period's basket.

HEADLINES: Today on the news, it was announced that the NFL will no longer use Roman Numerals to identify what year of Super Bowl it is. This is because people "don't know how to read the numerals and it gets confusing."

A note on registration:

-Periods 2 and 3: we will be going to register with your counselors next Tuesday, Feb.3

BECAUSE OF THIS THE LATIN ROOTS QUIZ WILL BE MOVED TO WEDNESDAY FEB.4!!!


Here is the agenda for today:

1. Warm Up: 

Period 2: Imagery #4....Cross out yesterday's imagery warm up! We will do one today that will replace it :)


Period 3: without looking at your notes, list the five nonfiction text structures and define them

2. Finish Text Structures activity

HW:

-If you have not viewed the text structures Prezi and taken notes, do so over the weekend.

-People that are still working on editorials: have them turned into the blog by MONDAY.

-Study for your Latin Roots Quiz and work on your collages!

2. Text Structures Activity

Reminders: 

-Collage: make sure you include the nine text features on your collage, label them AND include the definition for each. DUE 2/6/15

-Latin Roots #8: remember, the correct worksheet is labeled Latin Roots #8 Due 2/3/15.

HW: Print a copy of your editorial and bring Friday, email to me if you cannot print!!


PERIOD 2 ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS:

You will need your notes on text structures from last night!

Each of the groups will make a poster for the five text structures.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. EVERY group member must contribute to the poster.
2. Make them colorful and neat!

Instructions- each poster needs to have the following:

1. The name of the text structure type
2. The definition
3. Signal words and clues for that text structure type
4. A visual (use the graphic organizers on your desk, I NEED THESE FOR THIRD PERIOD)
5. An example paragraph demonstrating that text structure type.

Become experts on your structure, you will present your posters to your classmates!

PERIOD 3 ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS:

You will need your text structure notes from last night!

Each table has a different text structure passage and organizer.

Send one person up to grab one piece of chart paper.

Group Six: you will make a poster listing the types of text structures and their definitions!

Instructions:

First, read your passage together as a group.
Then, each of you will make a chart with the following components-every person in the group must contribute to the poster!

1. Identify what text structure type is used in your passage (double check with Ms. Sewell)
2. Summarize the passage in your own words.
3. List the signal words and clues for that passage that helped you identify the text structure
4. Draw the graphic organizer for your passage on your chart and fill it out
5. Create your own example paragraph using your assigned text structure type.

-Become experts on your passages and text structures-you will share them with the class!!

I was happy to receive a good sub report....despite the apparent confusion yesterday ;)

Here is what we have for today:

1. Warm Up: Imagery #2
2. Discuss Ethos, Logos, Pathos PPT (hopefully we did our HW...)
3. Opinion Article Activity

HW: Over the weekend, I want you to write your own opinion piece/editorial on any topic of your choosing. Think of something you have strong opinions about, and write about it. Why do you think that? What is your reasoning? Attempt to appeal to your reader's emotions and reasoning.

There is no right or wrong response, this is just practice. EXPRESS YOUR OPINIONS!


Examples: 

-Do schools give students enough chances to be creative?
-Should what you say on Facebook be grounds for getting fired?
-How would you feel about a computer writing your essays?
-Do TV shows like '16 and pregnant' promote or discourage teen pregnancy?
