Square 3: what counterarguments are there for your topic?

Square 4: what counterarguments you would present for your topic.

DUE MONDAY!!!

Thursday

Good morning! Today is the day for your literary analysis!!

Here is what you may have out for the essay:

-Data sheet
-Reading book
-Thesis statement guide
-Literary analysis rubric

NO CELLPHONES OR IT WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC FAIL.

Remember....before you begin have a game plan:

1. Read and RE-READ the prompt
2. Underline everything that the prompt is asking you to respond to
3. Then decide what you're going to argue and how you will SUPPORT your argument
4. Make sure to include the title, author, genre in your thesis statement
5. DO NOT USE 'I' or 'YOU' in your paper ever, ever, ever. You will lose points.

This time and this time only, if you would like me to review your thesis statement before you begin writing you may do so-raise your hand.

Title your paper Literary Analysis and the number of the topic you choose.

Here are the prompts you have to choose from:

1) Critic Roland Barthes has said, "Literature is the question minus the answer." Choose a novel, or play, and considering Barthe's observation, write an essay in which you analyze a central question the work raises and the extent to which is offers answers. Explain how the author's treatment of this question affects your understanding of the work as a whole. AVOID PLOT SUMMARY.

2) A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters OR themes of the work as a whole. AVOID PLOT SUMMARY.

3) One of the strongest human drives seems to be a desire for power. Write an essay in which you discuss how a character in a novel or drama struggles to free himself or herself from the power of others or seeks to gain power over others. Be sure to demonstrate in your essay how the author uses this power struggle to enhance the meaning of the work as a whole.

Remember, you have all of this class period and 30 minutes tomorrow. YOU CAN DO IT:)

3. Student Editorial Sample: review and respond

Today in partners, you are going to review a sample editorial written by a student about cell phone use in schools. Please do not write on the articles as we are sharing them between two class periods.

After you read through it, on a separate sheet of paper respond to the following questions:

-What is the argument the writer is making? What is their position?
-Is their opener engaging? How could they have made it more interesting?
-What reasons do they list for allowing cell phones in schools?
-What type of research do they use to support their argument? Is it enough? What else could they have added (e.g. statistics, facts) to make the editorial more effective?
-Did the writer list a call to action? What was it?
-Do you agree or disagree with this issue? Why/why not?

Discuss your responses with your partner, you each need to answer the questions separately. Turn it in to the basket by the end of the period.

HW: Over the weekend, decide on your topic and target audience, fill it in on the graphic organizer. On the BACK of your organizer (anywhere) explain to me why you chose this topic. Why does it matter to you? I will check packets on MONDAY.

Thursday

Good morning!!

Here is the agenda for today:

1. Warm up: Tone #3
2. Editorial Review

Silently read your opinion piece, look at it objectively. Based on what we have learned of opinion pieces so far, please respond to the following questions on your editorial:

1. What is missing from your writing? Did you make a call to action? What was it?
2. Did you list any research to support your argument?
3. Is your introduction interesting? Does it catch your attention?
4. Can you hear your voice in your writing? What is the TONE you established?

After you answer these questions, find a partner and exchange editorials. The partner needs to write their name and respond to the same questions, providing feedback on your editorial.

HW: Please print the Opinion Piece rubric (located in Course Docs, titled "opinion piece rubric"). It is an excel spreadsheet. Review the requirements so you know how you will be graded on your final opinion piece. KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE.
